(US, 2017) Written and directed by Mike Mills. Cast: Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, Billy Crudup.

Independent filmmaking is alive and well – as long as writer/directors like Mike Mills have the guts – and talent – to get their personal stories up on the screen. His last film (Beginners) starred Christopher Plummer as a father who comes out to his son as gay when he is 75. It is Mills’ fascinating if narcissistic mother (Annette Bening) who takes center stage in his new film, about a 15-year-old boy in 1979, swimming in the last wave of counterculture chaos and beauty before the Reagan era. Far from the typical buddy film, Jaimie is surrounded by three women whom he alternately loves and is tormented by: his mother, his uninterested-in-sex girlfriend (Elle Fanning), and a David Bowie look alike (Greta Gerwig) who is living upstairs.

“A big-hearted and bittersweet bear hug of a memoir…the movie that Mike Mills was put on this planet to make.” – David Ehrlich, Indiewire. 118 min.
