(Iran, 2015) Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. Cast: Taraneh Alidousti, Golshifteh Farahani, Shahab Hosseini, Merila Zarei, Mani Haghighi.

For newcomers to Iranian cinema, director Asghar Farhadi’s The Separation, winner of the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film, was a happy revelation. Farhadi’s About Elly takes place among the comfortably middle class, who strain to find reconciliation between their sophistication and their country’s strict interpretation of Islam. A married woman organizes a beach trip to the Caspian Sea with two other couples, as well as a shy kindergarten teacher named Elly (Taraneh Alidousti) – and the young man she believes is Elly’s perfect match. When Elly suddenly disappears, either through suicide, defiance, or fear, the couples are left to deal with the disturbing questions she leaves behind. “This superb, suspenseful film opens as a playful comedy…but by the end has become a moral drama likely to corrode all of your certainties.” – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice 120 min.
