(2016, Czech Republic/U.K./France) Directed by Sean Ellis. Screenplay by Sean Ellis and Anthony Frewin. Cast: Jamie Dornan, Cillian Murphy, Charlotte Le Bon, Anna Geislerov.

Unlike the feel-good revenge fantasy of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, Anthropoid is based on one of World War II’s least-known, actual historical events: the attempt to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, a main architect behind the Holocaust and the leader of Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia. The film follows two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, who parachute into their occupied homeland in 1941 with a crazily dangerous mission. Actors Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Gray) and Cillian Murphy (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, The Dark Knight) play the two soldiers as ordinary men who are plagued with fear, distraction and less-than-superhuman powers – but who are heroes in spite of it all. 120 min.
“[Anthropoid] amplifies the virtues of resistance, no matter the outcome. With luck, Academy Award voters won’t forget this one.” Christopher Kompanek, Washington Post.
