(US, 2016) Director: Denis Villeneuve. Screenplay: Eric Heisserer, based on the short story by Ted Chiang. Cast: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Nathaly Thibault, Mark O’Brien.

All bets are on Amy Adams for an Academy Award® nomination for her transcendent performance as a linguist scholar who is called in by the military to communicate with a fleet of extraterrestrial visitors who make a mysterious visit to Earth. Arrival is more Interstellar than Star Wars, with less action and more exploration into where humans fit in the awesome expanse of the universe. The sense of wonder and beautiful visuals are the work of Award-winning Québecois director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies, Prisoners, Polytechnique). Rounding out the inspired cast are Forest Whitaker as a gravelly-voiced General, and Jeremy Renner as a skeptical physicist. The eerily meditative music is the work of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. 116 min.
“Furiously intelligent…Arrival brings the beyond to us. Carl Sagan would be proud.” – Andrew Lapin, NPR.
