(US, 2017) Director: Miguel Arteta. Screenplay: Mike White. Cast: Salma Hayek, John Lithgow, Connie Britton, Chloe Sevigny, Jay Duplass.

Imagine, if you will, the plight of a successful Mexican immigrant (Salma Hayek) whose car breaks down outside the fancy digs of one of her massage clients in California. Beatriz is invited to stay for dinner, where the guest of honor is a smooth, soulless real estate developer (John Lithgow) – who may be responsible for exploiting the very town where she grew up. An audacious film that gets its bona fides from writer Mike White and director Miguel Arteta, who made Chuck and Buck and The Good Girl. They also deserve kudos for doing what Hollywood hasn’t: creating the perfect role for the 50-year-old Hayek, who told the New York Times: “I like me better now. And I’m actually curious to find out who I’m going to be next.”
“In the first dramatic comedy for the Age of Trump, Salma Hayek is luminous at a dinner party from hell.” – Owen Gleiberman, Variety. 83 min.
