(US, 2017) Written and directed by Daniel Raim. With: Harold Michelson, Lillian Michelson, Mel Brooks, Francis Coppola, Danny DeVito, James D. Bissell.
Before there were graphic novels there were storyboards, sketches of individual shots that make up a movie scene, from Ben framed by Mrs. Robinson’s leg in The Graduate, to Moses parting the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments. Both of these iconic images are the work of storyboard artist Harold Michelson, who worked for 40 years, on films from West Side Story to Spaceballs. But this new movie is not only about the collaborative nature of movie magic, it also portrays the 60-year love story of Harold and his wife, Lillian. A stay-at-home mom who raised three children, one of them autistic, Lillian became a film researcher who brought authenticity to films as different as Fiddler on the Roof and Scarface. Now widowed, Lillian tells their story with a variety of Hollywood actors, directors, and admirers. “One of the very best documentaries ever made about movies.” – David Noh, Film Journal International. 94 min.
