(France, 2015) Written and directed by Olivier Assayas. Cast: Juliette Binoche, Kristin Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz, Lars Eidinger.

A stunning new film by Olivier Assayas was written specifically for actress Juliette Binoche, star of some of the most interesting films of the last 20 years, including The English Patient, Kieslowski’s Three Colors Trilogy: Blue, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Working at what The Guardian calls “the peak of her powers,” Binoche plays a middle aged actress rehearsing for a play in which she has been cast as “the older woman,” even though she originally won fame as the ingénue – now claimed by a celebrity starlet (Chloë Grace Moretz). Isolated in the playwright’s home in the Alps, Binoche practices her lines with her assistant – a fantastic Kristin Stewart – as the boundaries between past and present, reality and art slip away. 124 min.

“A captivating hybrid of Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, Joseph Mankiewicz’s All About Eve, and quintessentially Assayas-esque meta-mischief.” John Frosch, The Atlantic
