(UK, 2016) Director: Mick Jackson. Screenplay by David Hare, based on Deborah Lipstadt’s memoirs. Cast: Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Spall, Andrew Scott, Alex Jennings.

Rachel Weisz (The Light Between the Oceans, The Constant Gardener) stars in a new film out to destroy the idea that all sides of ‘the truth’ should have equal play. It is based on the real-life British libel suit against New York historian Deborah Lipstadt (Weisz) by David Irving, who Lipstadt described as a Holocaust denier in a book. Since in Britain the burden of proof is on the defendant, she finds herself in the surreal situation of going to a London courtroom to prove that the Holocaust was real. With Irving claiming that photos can be doctored and witnesses coerced, the fiery Weisz is up for a real battle. Timothy Spall (Life is Sweet, Mr. Turner) does the incredible trick of making Irving, if not anywhere near likable, at least human. 110 min
“Denial does a stellar job demonstrating the truth is worth fighting for.” Peter Howell.
