(US, 2015) Written and directed by Marielle Heller, based on the graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner.
Cast: Bel Power, Alexander Skarsgard, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Meloni.

With only 16% of Hollywood movies directed by women, it’s no shock that we’ve seen far more films with teenage boys discovering sex, than with girls. Marielle Heller’s first film takes the plunge with 15-year-old Minnie (Bel Power), whose first line is “I just had sex. Holy Sh*t!” It’s 1970s San Francisco, and barely supervised by her mother (Kristen Wiig), Minnie develops an all-consuming crush on her mother’s boyfriend (Alex Skarsgard). But it is Minnie’s other passion, for drawing comics, that points the way to a more positive future. (The lovely animated sequences are by Sara Gunnarsdottir.) 101 min.

“Big summer action movies can be thrilling, but if you really want to feel your heart pounding out of your chest, try being a 15-year-old girl…” – Rebecca Keegan, L. A. Times.
