(US. 2016) Director: Scott Derrickson. Screenplay: Jon Spaihts, Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill, based on the character by Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, Michael Stuhlbarg.

Like the Batman trilogy, Doctor Strange is that rare creative take on a comic book made for sentient, thinking beings. It helps having a stellar cast starring Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Code, BBC’s Sherlock) as the brilliant, arrogant surgeon whose career ends when a car accident damages his hands. His Super Hero skills kick in when he studies sorcery with the otherworldly Ancient One (Tilda Swinton.) With f/x that rival Inception, Doctor Strange is a highly entertaining battle of intellect and magic against brute force. “What would somebody who just believes that there was nothing to consciousness except your neurons argue with someone who was saying, No, there’s actually more? That question was super awesome for me.” Astrophysicist Adam Frank, consultant to Doctor Strange. 113 min.
