(France, 2016) Directed by Paul Verhoeven. Screenplay by David Birke, based on the novel by Philippe Djian. Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Charles Berling, Virginie Efira.

Isabelle Huppert is a legend in French cinema who has starred in 100 films since 1972, including The Lacemaker, Madame Bovary, The Piano Teacher and Things To Come. But it is Elle that has brought her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, featuring a ‘woman of a certain age’ who goes straight for the revenge option (and not the police) after being raped. Although the original novel was set in the States, director Paul Verhoeven moved the story to Paris, claiming “no American actress would ever take on such an amoral movie.” While others might see the movie as more complex than amoral, it is true that Huppert has never been afraid to dive headfirst into the murky depths of human experience. 131 min.
“Huppert’s bid for ‘greatest living actor’ status grows more persuasive with each film.” – Guy Lodge, Variety.
