(France/Germany, 2017) Director: François Ozon. Screenplay: Ozon and Philippe Piazzo, based on the Ernst Lubitsch film Broken Lullaby, and the play by Maurice Rostand. Cast: Pierre Niney, Paula Beer, Ernst Stötzner, Marie Gruber, Johann Von Bülow.

Made after the human devastation of World War I, Ernest Lubitsch’s Broken Lullaby was a fierce anti-war film. Today, as Europe faces new conflicts with an influx of immigrants, François Ozon has made a gorgeously filmed, personal story of how hatred of ‘the other’ leads to loss. Their movies begin in the same way, as a French soldier (Pierre Niney) appears at the graveside of Frantz, a fallen German soldier. Although he brings comfort to Frantz’ parents and his young widow Anna (Paula Beer), the truth of the young men’s relationship is much harder to reveal. Unlike Lubitsch, Ozon turns his gaze to Anna, and her pursuit of happiness in spite of the hatred that surrounds her.

“This new film is exceptional and one of Ozon’s best.” – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle. 113 min.
