After writing his path-breaking study The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom, Marcus Rediker returned to Sierra Leone in 2013 to trace the African journey of the Amistad rebels who steered their own course to freedom.

Ghosts of Amistad: In the Footsteps of the Rebels is an award-winning documentary that chronicles that trip. By returning to the home villages of the rebels and speaking with local elders, taxi drivers, fishermen, and teachers, Rediker and his team reconstruct a submerged history. Chasing the story down rivers, across forests, and over the lesser-travelled pathways of history, this documentary recovers a lost record in the struggle against slavery. Ghosts of Amistad is a haunting indictment of the ongoing legacies of the slave trade and imperialism. It also reminds audiences of the living force of memory and the ongoing power of histories from below. Required viewing for all.

A discussion with author and producer Marcus Rediker, introduced by poet Martín Espada, and moderated by Trinity College professor Christina Heatherton will follow the film.
