(U.S., 2016) Director: Theodore Melfi. Screenplay by Melfi and Allison Schroeder, based on the memoir by Margot Lee Shetterly.
Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Mahershala Ali, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons.

To judge by all of the calls we’ve been getting from educators wanting to screen Hidden Figures for their students, it is one of those rare real-life movies (like Glory) that expand young minds, and change what we think we know about the past. The year is 1961, and the paradoxical context is America’s optimistic quest to send John Glenn into space, right alongside the blatant sexism and racism that keep black women from achieving. Unless, of course, those women are Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) brilliant mathematicians and engineers with the fighting spirit to break down walls. 126 min
“The previously untold story of three dynamic black women transgressing sociopolitical boundaries to help NASA is an important one that will have audiences cheering for years to come.” Nsenga K. Burton, TheRoot.com
