The desolate, starkly beautiful Patagonia coastline is the setting for Argentine director Lisandro Alonso’s new movie about the fevered fantasy of colonial exploration of the New World. Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings, Eastern Promises) stars as Gunnar Dinesen, a Danish engineer who arrives with his teenage daughter and a small band of sailors to find the magical city of Juaja in the 1880s. When Dinesen’s daughter (Viilbjrk Mallin) runs off with one of his men, he begins an increasingly desperate search for her, beset by fears of the Argentine army, hostile indigenous people, and the haunted spaces in his own mind. Winner, International Federation of Film Critics Grand Prix.
“I never once doubted that I was in the hands of a master filmmaker.” – Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine. 108 min.
