(US, 1973) Director: Norman Jewison. Screenplay by Melvyn Bragg, Norman Jewison based on the musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber. Cast: Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvonne Ellman, Barry Dennen, Bob Bingham, Josh Mostel.

Join us for a special evening as Ted Neeley and other cast members of Jesus Christ Superstar attend the screening of this unforgettable film! First created as a concept rock opera in 1970, Superstar paints the last week of Jesus’ life as a conflict between a more skeptical Judas and Jesus, who believes that God requires his sacrifice. As Superstar was made into a film, controversy followed: by B’nai B’rith, Catholics, Evangelical Protestants and even Communist Hungary, where it was banned. Today, Superstar is regarded as a brilliant Rice and Weber musical in line with Les Miserables, with great songs (I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane) and amazing performances. Stay for a Q and A with Neeley and members of the cast after the film. 103 min.

“Neeley’s intense G above high C is forever embedded in our culture …. No wonder, then, that Quentin Tarantino cast him in “Django Unchained.” His “Tracker’s Chant” is on the soundtrack.” Daniel Weizmann-Los Angeles Times.
