(Spain, 2016) Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, based on three short stories by Alice Munro. Cast: Emma Suarez, Adriana Ugarte, Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Dario Grandinetti, Rossy de Palma.

Alice Munro, the Canadian author known for revealing the subtle motivations of largely invisible women, seems to be an offbeat choice for filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, whose films have been called flamboyant, erotic, and full of emotion. The brilliant connection?
Both artists have an uncanny understanding of women: what it is they want, and who they are. Julieta opens as a middle-aged professor (Emma Suarez) runs into the friend of her estranged daughter, just as she is planning to leave Madrid for Portugal with her husband. Instead, she stays put, trying to track down her daughter and the past – which we see as the film sweeps us back in time with a vibrant young Julieta played by Adriana Ugarte, as she stumbles into passion, motherhood, and loss. 98 min.
“It’s no surprise that Julieta is marvelous to look at, but it possesses just as much substance as style.” Ann Hornaday, Washington Post.
