It can’t be denied – movie musicals are one of the things that truly make America great! This timely gift by director/writer Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) opens with a virtuosic one-take musical number of an L.A. traffic jam, where we meet our main characters. Emma Stone is a dreamy actor working as a barista, and Ryan Gosling a jazz musician who scorns the pop music that pays his bills. It is inevitable that they fall in love, and that love brings trouble. But it’s the glorious singing and dancing you will remember. 128 min.
“Catch the film on the largest screen you can find, with a sound system to match. And, whatever you do, don’t wait for a DVD or a download. The mission of this movie will be fulfilled only if it is seen by those – especially kids – who have never met a grown-up musical at the cinema” Anthony Lane, The New Yorker.
