There are plenty of great movies that show us that war is hell, but few that capture so perfectly that moment when war ends and the road to rediscovering one’s humanity begins. This little known piece of history, directed by Martin Zandvliet, takes place on the Danish coast, just as the Allies have defeated the Nazis. Seeing the German soldiers as faceless enemies, the Danes give the shell-shocked teenage prisoners the dangerous work of dismantling land mines on the beach. The haunting, wind-swept coastline is beautifully shot by Camilla Hjelm Knudsen, wife of the director. Academy Award® nominee for Best Foreign Language Picture. “Just when viewers might think they don’t make war pictures the way they used to, Zandvliet has come along and done it – even as he pushes the form forward with intellectual rigor, unerring clarity and stylistic panache.” – Ann Hornaday Washington Post. 101 min.
