(Canada/Ireland, 2017) Directed by Aisling Walsh. Screenplay by Sherry White.
Cast: Sally Hawkins, Ethan Hawke, Kari Matchett, Gabrielle Rose, Zachary Bennett.

British actor Sally Hawkins – known for her brilliant performances on TV (BBC’s Tipping the Velvet and Persuasion) and the big screen (Happy-Go-Lucky, Made in Dagenham, and Blue Jasmine) – is on many shortlists for an Academy Award® for her role in an unsentimental look at Canadian outsider artist Maud Lewis. Hawkins is slyly humorous as Maudie, a woman hampered by severe arthritis and poverty, who discovers her passion for painting when living in a tiny house in Nova Scotia with her gruff husband (Ethan Hawke). Fancifully colored flowers, cats, and butterflies gradually appear on everything in the house, from walls to breadboxes to cookie sheets. Although a vacationing New Yorker (Kari Matchett) finally discovers – and finds a market for – Lewis’ unique artwork, Maudie’s definition of success was bringing something beautiful into an imperfect world. 115 min.
“A portrait of a woman that feels raw, real and revelatory…Hawkins is a pure delight.” – Michael O’Sullivan, Washington Post. New York Times Critics Pick.
