(U.S., 2015) Director: Noah Baumbach. Screenplay by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig. Cast: Greta Gerwig, Lola Kirke.

The star (Greta Gerwig) and director (Noah Baumbach) of the highly acclaimed indie film Frances Ha return with a new comedy that they wrote together. Whatever the origin story, Mistress America explores the friendship between two women – a bond rarely portrayed on screen. Gerwig plays a 30 year old New Yorker, who is bubbling over with ideas and creative energy. She takes her soon-to-be step sister, (a lonely Barnard student played by Lola Kirke) under her wing, sharing her dreams of opening a restaurant/salon/hangout called Mom’s. Fascinated by her unconventional new friend, the student begins writing about her in a lightly-fictionalized novel, while joining in Gerwig’s outrageous schemes to raise money. 84 min.

“A masterwork of literary cinema: it isn’t merely about literature; it’s a work of brilliant writing, one of the most exquisite of recent screenplays.” Richard Brody, the New Yorker.
