(2015) Directed by Bill Condon. Screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher, based on the novel by Mitch Cullin.
Cast: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hattie Morahan, Patrick Kennedy.

Ian McKellen gives what would be an extraordinary performance at any age as the retired English detective, who discovers that his real life has been by overly embellished by Dr. Watson for the sake of entertainment. (Deerstalker cap & pipe, no. Brilliant deductive reasoning, yes.) Living with a narrow-minded caretaker (Laura Linney) and her intellectually curious son (Milo Parker), Holmes can’t resist a few more tantalizing mysteries left to unravel in London and Japan, before settling down to the peace of beekeeping and afternoon tea. 104 min.

“McKellen’s performance…is unsurprisingly wonderful. We are witnessing the untold story of a great, complex soul, a man more mysterious than any of the crimes he is supposed to have solved.” – A. O. Scott, New York Times.
