(UK, 2017) Director: Marianne Elliott. Playwright: Tony Kushner. Cast: Andrew Garfield, Denise Gough, Nathan Lane, James McArdle, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.

The Tony-Award winner for Best Play, Angels in America: Perestroika, continues the story of Prior Walter, the gay man dying of AIDS who was visited by a Mormon angel at the conclusion of Part One. With the help of his caretaker Belize and Harper, the young Mormon wife, Prior confronts the angel’s admonition that humans must stop moving forward to survive. Instead, honesty and compassion point the way forward. Except, perhaps, for Roy Cohn (in a visceral performance by Nathan Lane), who denies being gay even as he is haunted by the ghost of the activist he helped to execute, Ethel Rosenberg. “Kushner sends his haunting messenger, a gay man with a heroic spirit and a ravaged body, deep into the audience’s heart to ask just who we are and just what we intend this country to become.” – Frank Rich, New York Times. Live and Encore performances. A transformative four hours, with two 15 minute intervals.
