(Germany, 2015) Directed by Christian Petzold. Written by Christian Petzold and Harun Farocki, based on the novel by Hubert Monteilhet.
Cast: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, Nina Kunzendorf.

Christian Petzold’s subtle psychological thriller, set in a destroyed Berlin at the end of World War II, is a clever twist on Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. A cabaret singer named Nelly (Nina Hoss) who has survived Auschwitz with a disfigured face, returns home for reconstructive surgery and to find her German husband/accompanist (Ronald Zehrfeld). Although he does not recognize Nelly when they meet, he devises a plan whereby she will pose as his wife in order to reclaim her inheritance. More haunting mystery than melodrama, Phoenix raises the questions of betrayal, deception, and survival, in the aftermath of genocide. 98 min.

“Immensely watchable for its dark beauty alone…Phoenix also mean business as a tough-minded inquiry into Germany’s lost soul under the long shadow of World War II.” – Ella Taylor, NPR.
