(US, 2015) Directed by Ethan Hawke. Director of photography, Ramsey Fendall. Featuring pianist Seymour Bernstein.

After meeting the 87-year-old former classical pianist Seymour Bernstein at a dinner party, actor Ethan Hawke was impressed not only by his musical talents but by his gift for teaching and the loyalty of his many students. He quickly determined to make a movie featuring Bernstein, who teaches out of a modest apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. A refreshing counterpoint to the bullying teacher in Whiplash, Bernstein cares about his students’ performances and their inner lives, telling them: “I don’t think it’s very healthy to go careening around the world, playing the same pieces over and over again, and not developing other parts of you … especially your creative side” 81 min.

“In his calm defense of beauty, craftsmanship, intellectual curiosity and emotional connection as vital human needs, this is one artist who knows he doesn’t have to raise his voice to speak volumes.” – Justin Chang, Variety.
