(US, 2014) Written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, based on the novel by Lisa Genova. Cast: Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, Alec Baldwin, Hunter Parrish.

The problems of Columbia linguistics professor Alice (Julianne Moore) are of the genre snarkily known as ‘first world’: a daughter who hasn’t finished college, or not having enough time with her physician husband (Alec Baldwin). Until, at least, the day she notices that her memory is failing and her neurologist gives her the diagnosis of incurable, early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Moore won the Best Actress Academy Award® for her heartbreaking performance of an intelligent woman who sees her rare ability with words and her memories slip away, as she determines to face her future with dignity. Kristen Stewart also gives a remarkably affecting performance, as Moore’s free-spirited daughter.

“The movie’s most expressive element is Moore’s face, slowly moving from engagement, to worry, to disconnection and blankness.” – Mark Jenkins, NPR. 99 min.
