(2015, U.S.) Directed by F. Gary Gray. Screenplay by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff. Cast: O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., and Paul Giamatti.

One of the hottest movies of the year lands at Cinestudio with a flash of righteous energy, bringing the 1980s rap that put the black community’s anger during the Reagan era up on the screen. In 1980s Compton in South L.A., crack rules and police harass residents at will. Into this oppressive hothouse, a dealer (Eazy-E played by Jason Mitchell) joins up with Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins) Ice Cube (played by his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr.), and others, creating the group N.W.A and gangster rap. While catching on with white kids, N.W.A scares the pants off the white establishment with raps like F**K the Police. An amazing movie with the best soundtrack of the year! 122 min.

“reminds viewers not only who N.W.A. were and what they meant, but also why they mattered – and still do.” Ann Hornaday, Washington Post.
