(U.K., 2017) Director: Danny Boyle. Screenplay by John Hodge, adapted from the novels Trainspotting and Porno by Irvine Welsh. Cast: Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner, Anjela Nedyalkova, Kelly Macdonald.

Everything in Edinburgh’s underworld is completely different – and completely the same – as director Danny Boyle and the original cast drop in 20 years after Trainspotting’s original glory. It even starts with Renton (Ewan MacGregor) running for his life: but this time he’s not dodging the police, he’s having a go at a treadmill, just having arrived back home after 20 years doing well for himself in Amsterdam. He wants to reconnect with his old mates, and it’s not too much of a stretch to win over his best friend Sick Boy (a once-again peroxided Jonny Lee Miller). However, Spud (Ewen Bremner) is still in love with heroin, and Begbie (Robert Carlyle), the only one to go to prison for their youthful robbery, is crazy for revenge.
“Up there on the screen, where it matters, the dark magic remains intact…” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times. 118 min.
