(East Germany, 1990) Director: Peter Kahane. Screenplay by Peter Kahane, based on a story by Thomas Knauf. Cast: Kurt Naumann, Rita Feldmeier, Uta Eisold, Jürgen Watzke.

Acclaimed German director Peter Kahane will attend the special screening of his illuminating portrait of life in East Berlin in the 1980s, when Communist dogma still held a strangle hold on the population. One of the first movies to deal with the experience of both East Germany and unification, it stars as a young architect whose life and goals are strangled by brutal limitations of the older generation. Obsessed by his new vision for a cultural center, he battles the authorities, even as his wife and young daughter concentrate on escaping to West Germany. As a witness to history, The Architects is remarkable: made just before and after the Berlin Wall fell, the crew had to rebuild parts of the Wall to shoot the final scenes. 107 min. Sponsored by Trinity College German Studies Program.
“MORE THAN ANY FILM IN RECENT MEMORY, IT PORTRAYS THE DESTRUCTIVE IMPACT THAT A SPIRITUALLY COLD ENVIRONMENT CAN HAVE ON THE HUMAN SPIRIT.” — THE NEW YORK TIMES.
