(US, 2017) Director: Michael Showalter. Screenplay by Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani.

Kumail Nanjiani, the Pakistani-American comedian who kills it as Dinesh on HBO’s Silicon Valley, finally gets the starring film role he deserves! Nanjiani and wife Emily V. Gordon wrote the film (which premiered at the Sundance Festival) based on the crazy ups and downs of their own lives. As an up and coming comic who works for Uber to pay the bills, Nanjiani falls for psych student Emily (Zoe Kazan) – but then breaks up with her, afraid of defying his traditional Muslim parents (Anupam Kher and Zenobia Shroff). Shortly after, Emily gets a mysterious illness and is put into a medicalized coma. Now it is Emily’s parents (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) that Nanjiani must win over, as he realizes his hesitance could cost him, well, everything. 119 min
“An enormous crowd pleaser, funny and touching…and wise about the ways we interact with both our own parents and those of the people we date.” – A.A. Down.
