(US, 2016) Directed, written by Nate Parker. Cast: Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Mark Boone Jr., Aunjanue Ellis, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith, Gabrielle Union.

Trinity College’s Office of Multicultural A airs presents a special onetime screening of Nate Parker’s provocative film. The Birth of a Nation won a standing ovation at the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals, but its telling of the story of Nat Turner’s violent slave revolt in 1831 Virginia scared of some viewers. The film also suffered from the fact that the director/star was arrested on rape charges in 1999 – though found not guilty. We invite you to see the film and take part in the ongoing conversation about slavery, black filmmakers in Hollywood, sexual assault on campus, and much more. 118 min. A discussion will follow the screening.
“No one should miss it…no one who respects our country and its long struggle to define itself.” – Actor Hal Holbrook, in a letter to the New York Times.
