(Israel, 2015) Written and directed by Sharon Maymon and Tal Granit. Cast: Ze’ev Revach, Alisa Rosen, Levana Finkelstein, Ilan Dar, Raffi Tavor, Hanna Rieber.

The summer’s most tender – and unexpected – comedy takes place in a Jerusalem retirement community, where a group of residents invent a way for the sickest among them to die with dignity. It begins as 70-something amateur inventor Yehezkel (Ze’ev Revach) and his wife, Levana (Levana Finkelstein) put their heads together with a retired vet to devise a ‘mercy machine,’ allowing their friend Max to do what the doctors refuse: end his suffering. As word inevitably gets around, more requests start coming in. Don’t let the gallows humor fool you – this veteran cast gives the film just as much heart as it does laughs. 95 min.

Winner, Peoples Choice Award, Venice Film Festival
“In its choice to sidestep religion and politics, and adopt a humanistic perspective on the right to die, this is an original work of gentle militancy.” – David Rooney, Venice Film Festival.
