(Denmark/Finland/ Indonesia, 2014) Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer. With Adi Rukun, Amir Siahaan, Rohani Rukun. Joshua Oppenheimer’s

Academy Award®- nominated documentary The Act of Killing showed the victors of a 1960s Indonesian military coup re-enacting their crimes: the killing of one million alleged communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals. The Look of Silence focuses instead on the victims and survivors. Village ophthalmologist Adi Rukun, whose brother was murdered, questions his patients about the past, in a quietly intense search for the killers. Not seeking revenge, he confronts them with a question: how they can possibly live without punishment, or regret? 103 min.

“My film, I hope, is a poem about a silence borne of terror – and a poem about the necessity of breaking that silence.” – director Joshua Oppenheimer.
“Shocking and significant…a documentary that will make a difference in the world.” – Kenneth Turan, L. A. Times. Winner, Grand Jury Prize, Venice Film Festival.
