(U.S., 2015) Director: Ridley Scott. Adapted from the book by Andy Weir. Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Software engineer/part-time sci-fi writer Andy Weir said he was ‘blown away’ when his first published novel was not only optioned by Twentieth Century Fox, but would be directed by the legendary director of Blade Runner and Alien, Ridley Scott. But it is easy to see what drew Scott to The Martian: its meticulous scientific detail, a focus on intimate, human struggle, and plenty of suspense. Matt Damon plays an unlucky astronaut who is believed dead and left behind during a mission to Mars. He determines ‘not to die,’ trying to grow potatoes and contact home. On Earth, scientists go from mourning to arguing about if and how they could pull off an unprecedented, high-risk rescue. 142 min.

“An unapologetically stirring celebration of our ability, as a species, to solve even the most daunting problems via rational thought, step by step by step.” Mike D’Angelo, A.V.Club
