(Iran/France, 2016) Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. Cast: Shahab Hoseini, Taraneh Alidoosti, Baba Karimi, Farid Sajjadihosseini.

There was no doubt that Asghar Farhadi and The Salesman deserved to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Picture: it’s a masterful, Hitchcock-inspired mystery deeply interested in what crime can do to its victims and to its would-be avengers. Emad and Rana are a young couple, and amateur actors rehearsing The Death of a Salesman in a local Tehran theater. When they are forced to move into a new apartment formerly occupied by a prostitute, an unknown assailant gets in and assaults Rana (Taraneh Alidoosti.) Her husband’s obsession with finding her attacker plays out in their marriage, and on the stage as they perform one of American theater’s most iconic couples. 125 min

“in the midst of this painful tale of crime and punishment the spirit of Willy Loman makes its improbable, powerful and surprisingly literal return. Attention, as someone once said, must be paid.” A. O. Scott, New York Times.
