(UK, 1952) Directors: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Based on the opera by Jacques Offenbach, and the stories of E.T.A. Hoffman. Cast: Moira Shearer, Robert Rounseville, Robert Helpmann, Ludmilla Tchérina, Léonide Massine, Ann Ayars, Frederick Ashton.

Cinestudio presents a new Ultra High Definiton 4K restoration of The Tales of Hoffman, created from the original 3-strip Technicolor negative! Michael Powell’s vision of ‘composed film’ combines dance, music and image to create one unforgettable cinematic experience. The director of The Red Shoes, Peeping Tom and Black Narcissus brings to the screen Jacques Offenbach’s opera, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Thomas Beecham, with singers Robert Rounseville and Ann Ayars. Adapting the opera into a ballet allowed Powell to cast the incomparable Moira Shearer, and Robert Helpmann, Ludmilla Tchérina, and Léonide Massine. Rounseville plays Hoffman, who dreams of three past loves while drinking in a tavern: a doll (Shearer), a Venetian courtesan (Tchérina), and a soprano stranded on a Greek isle (Ann Ayars). 128 min.

This revelatory 4K restoration (containing previously unseen footage) unleashes feverish colors straight from the candy box … a decadent world of surreal, sensual delights – Robin Baker, London Film Festival..”
