Put aside your fond memories of the inspiring educators of The Dead Poets Society, The Choir, and School of Rock… and meet Marie Drazdechová (Zuzana Mauréry), a power-hungry middle school teacher in 1980s Bratislava. The dark humor comes from the memories of screenwriter Petr Jarchovsky who, like the children in Drazdechová’s class, must stand up on the first day of school and state their parents’ occupations. The reason? The highly-placed Communist teacher (in the tail end of the regime) wants favors wherever she can get them: smuggling cakes into Siberia, picking up groceries, and even ‘attentions’ from one student’s widowed father. As four parents meet secretly to plan their revolt, those who stand to gain – and those too afraid to go up against oppression – remain silent. For everyone who complains they’ve never had the chance to see any of the foreign language Oscar® nominated movies, The Teacher is a shoe-in!
“Actress Mauréry never wavers – one moment, Drazdechová is a lonely lady who’s just trying to keep herself busy; the next, she’s the Terminator.” – David Erlich, IndieWire.
