(Germany/Austria, 2016) Written and directed by Maren Ade. Cast: Peter Simonischek, Sandra Hüller, Michael Wittenborn, Thomas Loibl, Hadewych Minis.

Great movies about the complicated bonds between fathers and daughters are few and far between – but there is spanking new (and very funny) one to add to the canon! The third film by Maren Ade (Forest For the Trees) begins when the dog of an aging music teacher (Peter Simonischek) dies, and he decides he needs a new project: traveling to Bucharest to cheer up his buttoned-down corporate daughter (Sandra Hüller). She has little time for him in her over-scheduled life, so he starts showing up at her meetings and social outings dressed as different and often outrageous people, including a New Age lifestyle coach and the (decidedly female) Toni Erdmann. 162 min.
Nominated for Best Foreign Picture at the Academy Awards, and for Cannes’ Palme d’Or. “A thrilling act of defiance against the toxicity of doing what is expected, on film, at work and out in the world.” A.O. Scott, New York Times.
