(US, 2017) Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan. Cast: Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille.

On a snow-blinding tundra in Wyoming, a young Native American woman runs away from her attacker, only to collapse from breathing in the sub-zero air. This haunting opening scene gives writer/director Taylor Sheridan (writer of Hell or High Water) a hard act to follow. The fact that he does is thanks to his neo-70s style of filmmaking, one that takes time away from the action to observe its characters and the (damaged) world they live in. When the FBI sends in a rookie agent from Las Vegas (Elizabeth Olsen) to investigate, she teams up with the wildlife control officer who found the body – played with a wary intensity by Jeremy Renner. Taylor Sheridan won the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard Prize that recognizes new voices in cinema. 107 min.

“An impressive effort and result that opens up a world that most of us have never thought about, and renders it with sorrow and vividness.” – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle.
