(US, 2015) Director: Simon Curtis. Screenwriter: Alexi Kaye Campbell. Cast: Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Charles Dance, Moritz Bleibtreu, Antje Traue.

Sly. Brainy. Sexy. Regal. Helen Mirren has been called all of the above during her extraordinary career, in films as varied as The Long Good Friday, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, and The Queen. Her newest film finds Mirren in a stirring true story playing Maria Altmann, an elderly Austrian-Jewish woman with a steely core, who is driven to track down the priceless works of art that the Nazis stole from her family during World War II. With the help of an inexperienced young American lawyer (Ryan Reynolds), she takes on the Austrian government to retrieve Gustav Klimt’s masterful painting known as The Woman in Gold, which also happens to be a portrait of her Aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer. 109 min.

“Extraordinarily moving … Mirren, as you might expect, takes hold of the movie and steers it home.” – Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times.
