(US, 2017) Director: Todd Haynes. Screenplay: Brian Selznick, based on his book. Cast: Oakes Fegley, Julianne Moore, Millicent Simmonds, Michelle Williams, Jaden Michael, Tom Noonan.

Director Todd Haynes, whose movies have ranged from the provocative (Safe) to the lush and emotional (Far From Heaven), has opened a new cinematic door with a rush of creative energy. His new movie is based on the children’s book Wonderstruck by the author Brian Selznick, who wrote and illustrated The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Bucking the conventional trend, Haynes cast a non-hearing child (Millicent Simmons) as an isolated deaf girl who runs away to New York City in 1927. In a parallel story, a deaf boy (Oakes Fegley) runs away to a quite different Big Apple in 1977 in search of his father. Magically, the children are able to connect with each other, in an enchanting story of friendship without words – and through time. 117 min.
“A profoundly moving fable for all ages.. And it’s an exquisite one, at that.” Todd Ehrlich, Indiewire
